INEC Anambra State Prepares for February 3 Rerun Elections:
Following the nullification of the initial elections in 21 polling units by the Court of Appeal, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Anambra State has announced its readiness for a seamless rerun on February 3, 2024.
Assurance of Voter Safety and Security Measures:
At a media engagement held in Awka, the state’s INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, Elizabeth Agwu, assured registered voters of their safety during the rerun elections.
She emphasized that adequate security measures have been put in place, with both personnel and resources deployed to the locations where the elections will occur.
Appeal for Large Voter Turnout:
Agwu urged voters to participate actively in the House of Representatives rerun election scheduled for 21 voting places in the state.
Stressing that security would not be an issue, she encouraged voters to express their democratic rights without fear.
Specifics of Rerun Elections:
The rerun elections will be conducted in 16 polling units at Nanka in Orumba North Local Government Area, determining the winner of the Orumba North and Orumba South federal constituency.
Additionally, elections will be held in five polling units at Nnewi, Nnewi North Local Government Area, deciding the winners of Nnewi North and Nnewi South and Ekwusigo federal constituencies.
Numbers and Voter Guidance:
Agwu provided voter statistics, noting that the total number of registered voters at the affected polling units in Nnewi North is 97,438, while that of Orumba North is 161,914 voters.
She appealed to voters not to be compromised, emphasizing the importance of choosing candidates who can represent them effectively.
Transparent and Credible Election Promise:
Agwu assured voters that the rerun election would be free, fair, and credible. She encouraged voters not to be intimidated or influenced negatively.
Promising sufficient security measures, she cautioned against allowing anyone to manipulate or use them as pawns in the electoral process.
Emphasis on Freedom of Choice:
In her concluding remarks, Agwu emphasized the freedom of choice, urging voters to make informed decisions. She highlighted the democratic nature of the election, ensuring that voters would not face intimidation or harassment.
