Banning Plastic Materials: Federal Government’s Stand
The Federal Government has declared that the prohibition of certain plastic materials is unavoidable.
This announcement was made by the Minister of State for Environment, Iziaq Salako, in a statement issued on Tuesday, January 24.
Commendation for Lagos State’s Initiative
Salako commended the Lagos State Government for taking the decisive step to ban Styrofoam and other single-use plastics.
He emphasized that this action sends a robust signal to businesses and the public, highlighting the urgent need to comprehensively address the environmental challenge posed by single-use plastics.
According to Salako, the Lagos State Government’s bold decision aligns with Nigeria’s environmental sustainability agenda.
Interagency Committee and Sustainable Solutions
The minister revealed that the Federal Ministry of Environment has recently established an interagency committee.
This committee’s purpose is to facilitate extensive consultations across government entities, businesses, and stakeholders.
The goal is to formulate a sustainable solution that aligns with the unique context of Nigeria.
Exploring Alternatives and Policies
Salako further disclosed that the ministry is actively examining policies and initiatives geared towards promoting the production of alternatives to plastics.
This indicates a proactive approach to addressing the environmental impact of plastic usage in the country.
Addressing Poorly Regulated Plastic Use
Expressing concern about the current unregulated and indiscriminate use of plastics, Salako stressed the need for immediate action.
He highlighted that Nigerians should brace themselves for imminent changes, including the banning of certain plastic products.
As an interim measure, he advised individuals to adopt deliberate environmental actions, such as reducing and reusing plastics, and explore the expanding market of recycling for plastic waste.
Upcoming Awareness Campaign
In anticipation of the impending plastic ban and to promote holistic waste management, the minister announced plans for a robust awareness campaign and sensitization.
These initiatives aim to prepare Nigerians for the upcoming changes and encourage a more sustainable approach to handling plastic waste.
