Explosion Claims Lives in Bodija, Ibadan
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has officially confirmed that a recent explosion in the Bodija area of Ibadan led to the tragic loss of two lives and left 77 people injured.
The incident occurred on Tuesday night at Dejo Oyeleye Street.
Governor Makinde Addresses Journalists
Governor Makinde spoke to journalists, providing details about the explosion and its aftermath. He stated that the blast, which occurred at approximately 7:44 pm on January 16, 2024, was a result of illegal mining activities.
The illegal miners had stored explosive devices in a residential building on Dejo Oyeleye Street.
Swift Government Response and Search Operations
Governor Makinde highlighted the state government’s prompt response to the incident. First responders and relevant agencies were immediately deployed for search and rescue operations.
The governor assured that these efforts would continue throughout the night to ensure the safety and well-being of the affected residents.
Preliminary Investigations and Illegal Mining Connection
Preliminary investigations conducted by security agencies pointed to illegal mining activities as the cause of the explosion.
According to Governor Makinde, illegal miners occupying a house in Bodija had stored explosive devices, resulting in the tragic blast.
Assurance of Consequences and Ongoing Investigations
Governor Makinde affirmed that investigations were ongoing, and those found responsible for the explosion would face legal consequences.
He emphasized the deployment of earth-moving equipment, ambulances, emergency lights, and security to the scene.
Treatment and Support for Victims
The wounded and injured were promptly treated and moved to public and private hospitals within Ibadan. Medical personnel were on standby to provide necessary assistance.
Governor Makinde expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and assured that temporary accommodation would be provided for those whose houses were affected.
Call for Calm and Appreciation for Responders
Governor Makinde urged residents to call emergency services for any assistance and advised them to stay away from the immediate scene to facilitate rescue operations.
He expressed gratitude to first responders, security personnel, and medical staff involved in the rescue operations and requested prayers for those affected by the disaster.
