Ex-Minister Olu Agunloye Arraigned for Fraud Allegations
The former Minister of Power and Steel, Olu Agunloye, faced charges of fraud before Justice Donatus Okorowo of the Federal High Court, brought by the EFCC.
The charges are linked to the Mambilla hydropower project, totaling $6 billion.
Plea of Not Guilty and Remand in Kuje Prison
Agunloye, who served in the Obasanjo administration, pleaded not guilty during the court appearance.
Despite this, the Judge remanded him in the Kuje Correctional Center pending the consideration of his bail application.
Allegations Regarding Mambilla Power Project
The EFCC declared Agunloye wanted in connection with the controversial Mambilla power project, where he was implicated in awarding the scheme without proper approval from the Federal Executive Council.
Former President Obasanjo specifically accused him of involvement in the project without due process.
Denials and Counter-Statements
Agunloye denied any wrongdoing related to the Mambilla project, claiming that Obasanjo’s accusations were distorting the facts.
His spokesperson, Oluwafisan Bankale, released a statement, mentioning Agunloye’s denial and emphasizing the need to expose all involved parties in the controversy.
Agunloye’s Stance and Health Condition
Despite the allegations of fraud and forgery, Agunloye asserted his innocence, stating his confidence that the charges wouldn’t hold against him.
He expressed gratitude for the support received during his detention and mentioned his deteriorating health condition during his time in EFCC custody.
Rearrest and Alleged Bail Jumping
The EFCC rearrested Agunloye on December 13, 2023, citing allegations of bail jumping. This followed an arrest warrant issued against him.
The situation escalated amidst the ongoing legal proceedings and the ex-minister’s continuous denial of the accusations.
