Legacy Management Critique
Peter Seewald, the biographer of Pope Benedict XVI, has raised significant concerns about Pope Francis’ handling of his predecessor’s legacy.
As the world approaches the first anniversary of Benedict XVI’s passing, Seewald expressed deep disappointment in how Francis has managed the heritage entrusted to him.
Despite outward gestures such as complimentary remarks and “nice letters,” Seewald highlights a stark contrast between Francis’ words and actions, suggesting that much of what was valued and cherished by Benedict XVI has been disregarded or erased by his successor.
Trust and Disappointment
Seewald emphasized Benedict XVI’s trust in Pope Francis, yet underscored moments of bitter disappointment experienced by the former pontiff.
Despite Francis’ verbal acknowledgment of Benedict’s greatness, Seewald points to a lack of substantive actions that honor and preserve Benedict’s legacy.
Drawing a parallel to the reverence with which Benedict XVI upheld the legacy of John Paul II, Seewald questions whether Francis, by failing to nurture the continuity with his predecessors, is truly upholding the ideals of a “great pope” as professed in words.
A Lack of Continuity
The interview delves into the tangible actions—or the lack thereof—taken by Pope Francis to maintain a lineage with his predecessors.
Seewald’s observations paint a picture of insufficient efforts made by Francis to uphold the principles and values espoused by Benedict XVI.
He suggests that if Francis genuinely believes in Benedict XVI’s greatness, a more deliberate effort should be evident in preserving and advancing the legacy left behind.
However, Seewald contends that the current pope has fallen short in these regards, raising questions about the authenticity of his verbal tributes to his predecessor.
