NIHORT support youth, women farmers in Edo

The National Horticultural Research Institute (NIHORT), trained and empowered women and youths farmers in capacity building and investment in fishery, poultry and vegetable farming in Akoko-Edo Local Government Council of Edo State.

NIHORT, in partnership with House of Reps member representing Akoko-Edo Federal Constituency, Peter Akpatason, engaged farmers in a one-week workshop for capacity building.

Speaking during the training at Igarra in Akoko-Edo Local Government of Edo state, acting Executive Director, NIHORT, Dr.

Ephraim Nwanguma, said the Federal Government had deliberately focused on agriculture to lift the country out of “food and nutritional insecurity as well as poverty.


Nwanguma, who said poultry production was one of the important components of the livestock subsector in Nigeria, noted that it enhances food and nutritional security, and provides direct employment to a large number of rural and urban populace.

He also emphasised the need for food security and healthy livelihood.

He said: “Integrating vegetable, fish and poultry farming system especially in close system have potential contribution to food and nutritional security, improved livelihoods of smallholder farmers and employment opportunities.
