Yellow Level 2 Warning for Severe Weather in KwaZulu-Natal
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms and disruptive snow in KwaZulu-Natal.
These adverse weather conditions are anticipated on Sunday, October 29th.
Severe Thunderstorms in KwaZulu-Natal
According to the weather service, severe thunderstorms could result in gusty winds, significant amounts of small hail, and heavy downpours, potentially leading to local damage to communities, road flooding in susceptible areas, low-lying regions, and bridges.
These conditions are expected across several areas, including Gauteng, the northern parts of KwaZulu-Natal, the southern escarpment, and Highveld of Mpumalanga, the southwestern region of Limpopo, as well as the eastern parts of North West and the northern areas of the Free State.
Precautionary Measures Advised by KZN COGTA
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) has advised motorists to exercise caution.
Residents in low-lying areas are encouraged to relocate to higher ground due to the expected adverse weather conditions.
Siboniso Mngadi, spokesperson for KZN COGTA, highlighted that the province has already been experiencing rainfall, prompting the activation of a joint operation cluster involving municipalities, law enforcement agencies, and rescue teams to closely monitor weather conditions.
Mngadi emphasized the importance of vigilance during this period, especially as the province is still recovering from the devastation caused by heavy rains and strong winds in the previous week.
Disruptive Snow Warning
Additionally, the weather service issued a warning for disruptive snow in the north-eastern high-ground of the Eastern Cape and the southwestern parts of KwaZulu-Natal.
This disruptive snowfall may lead to pass closures, dangerous driving conditions, and the loss of vulnerable livestock.
As adverse weather conditions approach, residents and travelers are advised to stay informed and exercise caution to ensure their safety during these weather events.
