The Managing Director, Vinemond Farms, Mr Niyi Olukoya, has said insecurity is one of the biggest challenges threatening food security in the country.

Speaking at the Youth Agricultural Empowerment conference, held in Lagos on Thursday, Olukoya stressed the need for the government to address the spate of insecurity in the country for the agriculture sector to thrive.

According to him, farmers now rely on community guards with cutlasses to protect them while they work on their farms.

However, he noted that Nigeria has a bright future with more youths coming up with newer ideas to boost the economy through agriculture.

Also speaking, a commissioner in the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission, Prof.

Tunde Babawale, urged the youths to embrace the plan of boosting food security through agriculture.

He said, “Food production is key to sustenance and survival; therefore, I want to urge all participants in this programme to embrace the agenda of food security through agriculture.

However, he explained that low productivity, which is a current challenge of the agriculture sector, stemmed from a lack of interest in farming and insecurity
On his part, the Executive Director, Africa Bridge Initiative, Mr Taiwo Opeoluwa, described agriculture as the future of Nigeria, because it is the answer to the unemployment challenge in the country.

“Agriculture is the future of Nigeria, and the reason is that it is the answer to the unemployment challenge facing about 60 million youths in the country.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has made great strides in this regard.
