A Non Governmental Organisation, NGO , known as the New Environment Cooperation has called for improved collaboration with all relevant stakeholders to tackle climate change in Nigeria.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Oragnisation, Mrs.
Nancy Durodola stated this during the presentation of relief materials to some Internally Displace Persons, IDP’s in Abuja the Nigeria’s capital.
She said achieving a conducive climate was possible through partnership with various stakeholders.
The Grass Roots
She said the New Environment Corporation was embarking on a campaign with relevant stakeholders to educate people at the grassroots on what climate change is all about and its implications to the environment.
The NGO which also gave relief materials to Samaru Kataf IDP, Zankwo in Kaduna State and Daudu II in Benue State said; ” A lot has been done by all stakeholders on climate change and other related environmental issues with little impact at the grassroots.
The reason being that an average man thinks that climate change issues are for the elite because of the terminologies we use.
So, we are leading a campaign to bring climate change to earth at the grassroots,” Mrs.
Durodola stated.
She noted that the issues of Climate Change was affecting the world.
“We can testify from the side of the world that we are seriously hit by the issues of Climate Change.
Due to drought and migration from the rural areas.
Some of the rural dwellers wouldn’t have migrated from their farms, if it was yielding.
They don’t need to move away.
Due to Climate Change, a lot of them had to migrate to urban areas,” She said.
Insecurity
The Chief Executive Officer of the Oragnisation, Mrs Durodola stressed the need for the government to provide a more conducive atmosphere for the people to live , while calling on the government to end insecurity in the country.
She said issues of killings and kidnappings in the country were enormous and heart-aching.
“The aggrieved ones amongst us that are kidnapping and killing mercilessly have been talking.
It is high time for the government to listen to what their grievances are so that the blood bath in this country will stop .
The world today is being hit by the effect of these climate change and we must act fast.
Part of the crisis we are.
For instance, a Kidnapper said all his cows has finished and he had nothing left to do in the bush.
So, he resulted into kidnapping.
How did his cow or cattle finished.
We believe it was due to human consumption and drought.
” Mrs.
Nancy stated.
Sheathe their swords
She also appealed to the bandits to sheathe their swords by stopping the bloodshed, for the sake of the Internally Displaced Persons scattered in different parts of the country.
“It is hurtful but we urge everyone to allow peace to reign, so that issues can be resolved amicably,” She said.
Mrs Nancy believed that Nigeria has a great potential, with human capacity and resources to drive the nation forward.
She urged the government to invest more in sports, film, key ministries and parastatals that the youths can relate with, to keep them engaged.
According to her, the internally Displaced Person are suffering.
Relief Materials
The Chairman of the Corporation Mr Emmanuel Durodola said the relief materials donated to the Internally Displace Persons, IDP’s was to bring succor to the people affected by insecurity.
Mr Durodola pledged the NGO’s continious support for the IDPs to alleviate the sufferings of the people in the camps.
“According to him, it is the responsibility of the government to provide security to it citizens, there are other technologies the government can use to fish out the Bandits terrorising the country as it was done in the developing countries,” he said
He said negotiating with the bandits to know their grievance would also help in curbing the menace.
