A Premier League clash between Brighton and Fulham ended in tragedy on Saturday when a 72-year-old Brighton supporter fell seriously ill during the second half.
The match at the Amex Stadium concluded with a 1-1 draw, but the somber mood lingered long after the final whistle.
Immediate Medical Response
The supporter, seated in the upper tier of the East Stand, received immediate attention from club medics who carried out prolonged CPR and defibrillation at the scene.
Emergency services joined in the efforts, but despite all attempts, the man sadly passed away following the conclusion of the game.
Club’s Statement and Condolences
Brighton’s chief executive Paul Barber expressed the club’s deepest sympathies: “This was an incredibly sad end to the match this afternoon.
Our condolences go out to the family and friends of the gentleman who lost his life.”
He also acknowledged the emotional impact on staff and nearby supporters, assuring that proper support would be provided in the coming days.
Decisions During the Emergency
The medical team determined that the best chance of survival was to treat him at his seat rather than move him to a hospital immediately.
Privacy screens were put in place by the stewarding team, and discussions were held with Sussex Police and the Premier League about possibly stopping the match.
Ultimately, the decision was made not to pause the game, as the majority of fans and players were unaware of the situation, and stopping could have disrupted resuscitation efforts.
Professionalism Praised
Dr. Rob Galloway, the club doctor and emergency medicine consultant, praised the response: “It was a tragic outcome, but from an emergency response perspective, the medical care was exemplary.
The professionalism of club stewards and Sussex Police provided the team with the best possible working environment.”
Support for Witnesses
Brighton has encouraged any staff or supporters who witnessed the incident to seek help if needed.
Support lines include the Samaritans at 116 123 or Young Minds via text at 85258.
Match Highlights
On the field, Brighton initially took the lead when Matt O’Riley converted a penalty in the 55th minute.
Fulham’s Rodrigo Muniz equalized in the sixth minute of stoppage time, leaving the game to finish at 1-1—a result overshadowed by the heartbreaking events in the stands.
