5 Common Problems with Garage Doors and How to Fix Them

A garage door can be a major inconvenience when it isn’t working correctly. Whether the issue is with the sensors, springs, or motor itself, you want to get your garage door back in working order as soon as possible. Let’s take a look at five common garage door problems and how you can troubleshoot them.

5 Common Garage Door Problems and How to Troubleshoot Them

Garage door owners might face the following common garage door problems and can find their solutions as well:

Problem # 1. The Garage Door Won’t Open or Close

If your garage door won’t open or close, the likely culprit is a malfunctioning remote control or keypad. If it’s the remote control that’s not working, first check to make sure that the batteries are properly installed and not depleted. If they’re fine, try reprogramming the remote according to the manufacturer’s instructions. If neither of those solutions works, then you may need to replace either the remote or its receiver unit (or both).

If it’s the keypad that’s not functioning correctly, you’ll need to replace its battery first before attempting any other fixes. If replacing the battery doesn’t help, then it might be time to invest in a new keypad altogether.

Problem # 2. The Garage Door Opens and Closes On Its Own

If your garage door opens and closes on its own without any input from you, then there are a few possible causes for this issue. One cause could be an obstruction in one of the sensors—which can easily be remedied by cleaning out debris from around them—or it could also be a wiring issue that needs professional attention from an experienced technician.

Problem # 3. The Garage Door Falls Too Quickly When Opening/Closing

If your garage door falls too quickly when opening or closing—either all at once or just partway through—it could indicate that there’s something wrong with one of its torsion springs (the large coil-shaped springs located above each side of the garage door). Torsion springs tend to wear out over time due to natural wear and tear; if yours is faulty, it’ll need to be replaced by an experienced technician right away for safety reasons.

Problem # 4. The Motor Makes Unusual Noises When Operating

Garage door motors typically make very little noise while operating; this is because they have been designed specifically for quiet operation. If yours is making loud noises while running—such as grinding or rattling noises—then chances are something has gone wrong inside of it and will require professional attention from a qualified technician who can diagnose and repair whatever problem is causing these noises.

Problem # 5. There Is Obvious Damage To One Of The Panels/Tracks/Springs

Physical damage to any part of your garage door should always be taken seriously; even minor damage can lead to bigger issues down the line if left unchecked for too long! As such, if you notice any visible damage—such as bent tracks, broken panels, cracked windows, etc.—you should contact an experienced technician right away so they can assess and repair whatever issue has caused this damage before it gets worse!
