13,000 pounds of Home Run Inn frozen pizza recalled for metal complaints

Federal food safety regulators said on Sunday that Home Run Inn is recalling more than 13,000 pounds of frozen meat pizza after receiving customer reports of metal in the Chicago-style pies.

The recall covers Home Run Inn Chicago’s Premium Pizzeria Deluxe Sausage Classic Pizza with a best-by date of December 3, 2022, according to the Food Safety and Inspection Service of the United States Department of Agriculture.

The frozen pizzas were packaged in 33.5-ounce cartons with the establishment number “EST. 18498-A” under the USDA inspection mark, according to the notification. The items were transported to an Illinois distributor, who subsequently distributed them to retailers.

The problem was discovered when the Woodbridge, Illinois-based company “notified FSIS that it had received consumer complaints reporting metal was found in the pizza,” the agency stated.

“FSIS is concerned that some product may be in consumers’ freezers or found at distributor and retail locations,” it said. The agency urged people not to eat the pizzas and instead to discard or return them.

There have been no verified complaints of injuries or bad reactions related to consumption of the recalled pizzas, according to the FDA.

Home Run Inn, a family-owned business with nine locations, distributes its frozen pizza to over 35 states. According to the company, Home Run Inn began as a modest tavern on Chicago’s South Side in 1923.
